Tyler Thomas is vice president and general manager at Technical Plating in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. He is active in the finishing community as vice president of the NASF chapter in Minneapolis.
Thomas has been with Technical Plating since 2013, where he started out racking parts. He maintains company finances, certifications, customer service, and overall business growth. Thomas is an Eagle Scout, and sits on several small business boards. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, fishing, boating, golfing and being up north at the cabin. He studied at the University of Tampa and at Northeastern University, and holds a degree in finance, accounting, and management.
How did you get your start in the finishing industry? Being a family business, I grew up around plating; I worked in the plant during summers and during college and jumped on board full-time after college.
What do enjoy best about the industry? I enjoy the challenge. The new projects that come and go, and the wide variety of different parts for different industries.
Is your glass half full or half empty? My glass has always been half full.
What was your favorite subject in school? Science, so the chemistry side of plating has always been fun for me.
What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten? A pea crab from an oyster.
Do you collect anything? I have a small plant collection.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Introvert, for sure.
Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest? My sense of smell.
Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? A great relative was U.S. Secretary of State Walter Gresham.
What do you do to keep fit? I do kickboxing and high-intensity interval training at a small, local gym.
If you had a warning label, what would yours say? “Turn off your rectifier when not in use”.
What's the most interesting thing you can see out of your office or kitchen window? The trucks pulling into our shipping dock, gives me a heads up of what parts are arriving.
On a scale of 1-10, how funny would you say you are? A 10.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Continuing to work to grow the presence of Technical Plating, and focusing on expanding capabilities and quality.
What was your first job? Bussing tables and doing dishes at a restaurant at 14.
