Wesley Schmitt is the Global OEM Manager at Pavco, a leading developer and supplier of chemistries for the metal finishing industry since 1948.
He has been with Pavco since 2014, and previously worked at a finishing operation in Tennessee. He has a chemical engineering degree from Purdue University.
How did you get your start in the finishing industry?
Following college, I worked in the wastewater treatment department at a large steelmaking facility. One of my projects was to improve the hexavalent chrome treatment process coming from the tinning operation. I had no idea what electroplating was, but chrome was the magic word that connected me with a job shop in Tennessee.
What do enjoy best about the industry?
The broad range of industries served. It offers the opportunity to get involved and better understand many things we encounter in our daily lives.
Is your glass half full or half empty?
Standard engineering answer: twice as big as it needs to be.

A knife, firestarter, and rope. I have some level of confidence in my survival skills, however long-term I have no chance with my vision. Contacts/glasses will only last so long.
What was your favorite subject in school?
Hands-on STEM classes: physics, chemistry, engineering labs.
What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?
My general rule when I travel is “If you eat it, I’ll eat it — or at least try it.” One of the primary benefits of travel is experiencing other cultures and food is a great start. Pig brain, blood tofu, shirako, and goose tartare get the biggest reaction.
Do you collect anything?
Tools. Not as a hobby, rather as I take on more DIY projects. I like the challenge and achievement of doing things myself.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
It certainly depends on the situation, but slightly more extroverted. I’m not the most outgoing person, but I really enjoy being around people.
Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest?
Sight. I grew up watching and trying to learn from family members and friends with skilled trades. I have always been impressed by welders, mechanics, brick masons, seamstress/seamsters, etc.
Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous?
Not that I know of. My wife is allegedly related to George Washington, although I have not seen the lineage and she is quite skeptical.
What do you do to keep fit?
I run more often than anything; not because I enjoy it, but it is the most convenient exercise. I much prefer soccer, hiking/backpacking, mountain biking, basketball, or tennis.
Does your family have a “motto” – spoken or unspoken?
Be a good listener. Be a good friend. Have fun.
What three things do you think of the most each day?
1) To-do List: what needs to be done, how should I prioritize it, and adjust as the day goes; 2) Am I capable of doing it myself? This is especially true when it comes to things around the house: building shelves, furniture, painting, etc.; 3) What is for dinner (or any meal)?
If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
No off switch. I find it very difficult to just sit and relax.
What song would you say best sums you up?
Float On by Modest Mouse. It reminds me to stay positive even when unpleasant things happen.

Dave Chappell. In addition to being brilliantly hilarious, he is an authentic, decent human being.
What's the most interesting thing you can see out of your office or kitchen window?
My kids and I built a balance beam out of leftover fence materials that is outside our kitchen window. My daughter painted a sign inviting neighbors to practice their balance while out for a walk. We get to watch neighbors of all ages try it.
On a scale of 1-10, how funny would you say you are?
6? It really depends on the audience. The most important thing is that my kids are young enough to think I’m pretty funny.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Just the basics: I expect to continue to maintain and grow strong relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. I hope to still be healthy enough to continue my favorite activities; maybe try some new ones. And I hope to continue learning and growing professionally.
What was your first job?
I was mowing grass well before I probably should have been, but my first “real” job was at an indoor soccer facility.
How many languages do you speak?
Unfortunately, only one. However, I attempt to know the basics when traveling: hello, goodbye, please, thank you, bathroom, beer.
If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?
My daughter says a horse. I don’t think she had any merit behind it, she’s just really into horses right now. My wife agrees though, due to the lack of an off switch (work horse).
What is one thing you will never do again?
I don’t think I’ll go on another cruise. I much prefer authentic, non-tourist travel.
Who knows you the best?
I’m fortunate have some really strong relationships with family and friends that know me well, but my wife certainly knows me the best.
