Joelie Zak is co-owner of Scientific Control Laboratories, president of Admiral Environmental, and a Master Surface Finisher.
The Chicago resident is a long-time active participant in the metal finishing industry. She is an AESF Fellow for the National Association for Surface Finishing and is past president and past Government Advisory Committee chairperson for the NASF.
How did you get your start in the finishing industry?
By luck! I was hired by Scientific Control Laboratories in 1993, immediately after graduation from Indiana University. It was supposed to be my first job, not my forever job, but here I still am. One industry colleague told me early in my career that the finishing industry is like the song Hotel California by the Eagles: "You can check out anytime you'd like, but you can never leave." It holds true for me.
What do you enjoy best about the industry?
The people. I am a nerd at heart, and there are many smart folks in this industry. I enjoy investigative work to help to solve technical problems.
Is your glass half-full or half-empty?
Neither, as "my cup runneth over." I practice being grateful daily.

Shark fin soup in Shanghai
What is something you will never do again?
Eat shark fin soup
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert with above-average social skills.
Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest?
Sense of smell. I just started making my own lavender candles at home.
Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous?
I'm a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
What do you do to keep fit?
Yoga, walking, and meditation.
Does your family have a "motto" – spoken or unspoken?
"Don't take yourself too seriously."
If you were ruler of your own country, what would be the first law you would introduce?
Free speech and fair elections.
If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
Caution: Critical Thinker.

I would love to have a personal conversation with former Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight.

The Chicago L train Blue Line.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Officially old.
What was your first job?
Waitressing and I loved it.
How many languages do you speak?
English and a little Spanish.

My mentor, previous boss and partner, Frank Altmayer.
If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?
A Golden Retriever. I love naps.
