If you are in the state of Michigan and you spot some stunning metalwork, look closely. There’s a good chance it could be the craftsmanship of the team at Diseños Ornamental Iron.

Nieves LongordoNieves LongordoFrom the metal work at The Element — previously known as The Metropolitan Building in Downtown Detroit — to stylish balconies, gorgeous gates and grills as well as stunning staircases, it’s likely handcrafted, custom built, powder coated metal work made with Diseños Ornamental Iron’s unique touch.

With more than 40 years serving Southeastern Michigan and beyond, Diseños Ornamental Iron proudly served Metro Detroit as a Minority and Woman-owned business. The team covers design, fabrication, installation and of course, powder coating.

Top quality powder coating is required to complement the team’s handiwork, with performance, durability and aesthetics, and DOI often uses IFS powders to deliver just that.

“Our clients expect the best from us, and that includes the finish on our work” says Nieves Longordo, President of Diseños Ornamental Iron. “We appreciate the friendly customer service and quality IFS powder coatings deliver and tough, durable coatings with excellent scratch and mar resistance are perfect for our applications.”

Disenos3Her father, Tony Martinez opened shop over 40 years ago in a small garage in Southwest Detroit, where he had no idea he was planting a seed that would grow into a great legacy that would make history in Detroit.

After many successful years in business, Martinez decided it was time to retire and hand over the baton to his daughter, Nieves. In 2010, she became the new president and owner of Diseños Ornamental Iron. Although Martinez was no longer the president, he still supervised operations for an additional three years while the company made this transition.

In 2013, Martinez said farewell to Diseños Ornamental Iron, and departed to Colombia to enjoy his retirement. Longordo is determined to proudly carry on the legacy of Diseños, working with that hardened grit familiar to the people Detroit, and those in the steel and iron industry.

Disenos4The focus is on custom ornamental metalwork — usually for residential or commercial applications — and projects include unique handmade handrails, luxury entry driveway gates, custom spiral staircases, and light structural steel. Each project is unique to that customer, and the team works with each client to deliver something special, each and every time.

“We pride ourselves on perfecting one of the most unique forms of functional art still in use, custom made metal work,” Longordo says. “Our wrought iron is forged in the same way this historic art form has been, but can also be made into a modern design. From generation to generation, specialized blacksmiths have been taught the tricks of the trade to work metal like clay, and to expedite the process to transform an idea, into a digital design, and finally into powder coated forged metal. It’s impressive to see.”
