Robin Deal, a Wastewater Specialist for Hubbard-Hall, presents a paper on “Industrial Phosphates and Wastewater Impacts.”
The paper presents several ways to solve issues related to wastewate in finishing operations.
While little known in the metal finishing world, Deal says bacteria can be a way to solve any number of wastewater issues, including high phosphorus removal. Phosphorus accumulating organisms, POAs, store phosphorus in their cells as polyphosphates. She says they can then use the polyphosphates as an internal energy source with out the need for an external electron acceptor such as oxygen or nitrate.
While many metal finishing treatment plants struggle with cost effective ways to remove phosphorus, they overlook this process because of limited space and time restraints.
