Following a comprehensive rewrite, the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) has relaunched its Internal Corrosion Specialist (ICS) Certification, restoring an advanced credential for experienced professionals seeking to validate their expertise in internal corrosion management.
The ICS certification confirms that credential holders possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to competently manage or supervise the design, implementation, and evaluation of internal corrosion programs. The certification is intended for experienced professionals whose responsibilities require advanced technical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to translate corrosion data and operating conditions into effective mitigation and management strategies.
“Internal corrosion decisions can have direct consequences for asset integrity, safety, environmental protection, and operational performance, so organizations need professionals who can evaluate complex conditions and make informed decisions,” said Keenan Loubser, senior director of credentialing and certification at AMPP. “The Internal Corrosion Specialist certification gives experienced professionals a way to demonstrate that advanced level of competence while giving employers greater confidence in the people responsible for managing this critical infrastructure. Bringing this credential back gives our members another meaningful opportunity to validate the expertise they have built throughout their careers and distinguish themselves in the profession.”
ICS-certified professionals demonstrate advanced understanding of internal corrosion mechanisms and the environmental variables and operating conditions that contribute to corrosion. They are expected to analyze corrosion data and trends; evaluate hazards and risks; recommend mitigation strategies; support root cause and failure analyses; and design, implement, manage, and periodically review internal corrosion control programs.
The credential also recognizes the broader responsibilities of specialists, including managing corrosion data and assessments; communicating recommendations; evaluating alternative design and monitoring approaches; and understanding the importance of monitoring, mitigation, record management and legal or regulatory compliance.
An Advanced Milestone for Corrosion Professionals
ICS represents a high-level achievement within AMPP’s internal corrosion certification pathway. Candidates must hold an active Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist certification and meet substantial professional experience requirements before pursuing the credential.
Candidates may qualify through one of two pathways:
- A bachelor’s degree in physical science or engineering plus eight years of verifiable internal corrosion-related work experience in pipelines and associated facilities; or
- 12 years of verifiable internal corrosion-related work experience in pipelines and associated facilities.
Candidates must also complete the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course or equivalent training, submit an approved certification application, and complete the Internal Corrosion Specialist written exam.
The certification is valid for three years, with recertification requiring continued relevant work experience. The exam is delivered in person through Pearson testing centers.
