German Electroplater Hosts Fire Department Drill to Strengthen Emergency Preparedness

Germany’s Umicore Electroplating recently partnered with the Schwaebisch Gmuend Fire Department to conduct a large-scale emergency response drill at its Plant 2 facility, giving firefighters a chance to practice rescue operations and familiarize themselves with the plating plant's layout in a real emergency.

About 25 firefighters from Division 2 of the Schwaebisch Gmuend Fire Department participated in the exercise, which simulated a fire scenario in which smoke had blocked evacuation routes inside the facility.

During the drill, emergency crews rescued three people from different parts of the building. Under the direction of Squad Leader Christian Kranenberg, firefighters used multiple rescue techniques to reach the simulated victims. One individual was evacuated from the roof using a turntable ladder, another was rescued from an interior room with a portable ladder, and a breathing apparatus team entered the simulated fire area to bring a third person to safety.

To support the exercise, firefighters deployed an incident command vehicle, two fire engines, and a turntable ladder. Division Commander Achim Kieffer observed the drill, monitored operations, and evaluated the response.

Familiarization with Facility Layout

Following the rescue exercise, firefighters toured the upper-floor production areas to improve their familiarity with the facility's rooms, corridors, and access routes. The walkthrough highlighted the challenges emergency responders can face when navigating large industrial buildings with numerous subdivisions and work areas.

For plating and surface-finishing operations, facility familiarity is especially important because of the complexity of manufacturing layouts, specialized process equipment, chemical storage areas, and ventilation systems.

Participants later gathered in the company's cafeteria to discuss initial observations and lessons learned from the exercise.

According to Umicore Electroplating, the event reinforced the value of regular on-site training and strong cooperation between industrial facilities and local emergency responders.

Preparedness as a Safety Strategy

Markus Weiler, head of technical services at Umicore Electroplating, said familiarity with the facility can significantly improve emergency response times.

“Those who know the layout can provide assistance more quickly in an emergency,” Weiler said. “In our large buildings with their many rooms, even a seemingly routine firefighting operation is challenging. That's why on-site drills are an important part of our safety precautions: They make it easier for the fire department to respond and thus help protect our employees and facilities.”

Industrial plating operations often maintain comprehensive emergency-response plans that address fire protection, chemical handling incidents, worker evacuation procedures, and communication protocols with local authorities. Periodic drills test those plans and give first responders a better understanding of site-specific conditions before an actual emergency occurs.
