Review: Dewalt Bandsaw Shows Power and Versatility

The move in most manufacturing shops to be more agile and cord-free increased with Dewalt’s Brushless Cordless Mid-Size Bandsaw.

The tool is extremely versatile as we sent it to be tested with a Northern Kentucky manufacturer who often needs to make precision cuts of materials, as well as sometimes taking off bolts and screws.

DCS379P1The shop used the bandsaw to make cuts on bar stocks and some metal studs, but it was also finding other uses for it as the work progressed.

“It is very versatile,” says Greg, the shop foreman. “When working, we often don’t have time to run over to a bandsaw or even have it in the field if we are working there. But it is convenient and nifty to slip a battery in it and use it wherever needed.”

Here are a few points on the bandsaw from Dewalt:

  • The 20-volt MAX XR Brushless Cordless Mid-Size Bandsaw (DCS378) delivers up to 120 cuts per charge through a 12 gauge strut and cuts in as fast as 5.1 seconds.
  • The 20-volt MAX XR Brushless Cordless Dual-Trigger Bandsaw (DCS379) is designed with a “Perform & Protect” auxiliary handle that houses a secondary trigger for added control on the foregrip.
  • Each bandsaw features an integrated blade guard, an LED light, and a Tool Connect Chip pocket, which is sold separately.

Dewalt says the two bandsaws are designed for tough cutting needs in commercial applications. Designed for quick and efficient performance, they deliver up to 120 cuts per charge through 12 gauge strut and cut 12 gauge strut in as fast as 5.1 seconds. They are part of the XR® lineup; the tools are each equipped with a large 3-3/8 in. cut capacity suitable for a wide range of work.

Greg says he was surprised at the saw's power and how easily it was used, with its gripping and overall feel just right.

“Sometimes when cutting on a bandsaw like this, it can be awkward cuts and angles,” Greg says. “This saw was easy to maneuver around and get to the area we needed cutting. It wasn’t too bulky but had the power we needed. Anything more, and we could have used our shop saw, but this worked perfectly.”

Dewalt, a Stanley Black & Decker brand and leader in total jobsite solutions, also unveiled the 20V MAX Hydraulic Knockout Tool (DCE600) and the bandsaw when it premiered in April.
