The Masters’ Association of Metal Finishers is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program.

David NorwineDavid NorwineThe 2023 MAMF David Norwine Scholarship was established to help further the educational goals of MAMF member companies’ employees, owners, and immediate family (parent/guardian, child, sibling, or spouse) who have been employed in the metal finishing industry for at least two years and MAMF members for two years.

Applicants will be eligible for a scholarship award as full-time (12 credits or more per semester) undergraduate students at any accredited school (Community College, Technical School, Vocational School, 4-year College, or University).

Scholarship awards are reviewed by independent judges and based on overall merit with points assigned to:

  • Academics and Grade point average
  • One letter of recommendation (academic or non-academic)
  • Essay
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Charitable activities and community service
  • Awards and achievements
  • Outside jobs and projects

Scholarships will be awarded without discrimination as to financial need, race, sex, or religion and are awarded in the amount of $1,000. All applications are kept confidential and submitted to the Selection Committee for review and action.  

The 2023 MAMF David Norwine Scholarship will be awarded by approximately May 1, 2023.

The application deadline is April 3, 2023, and no extensions will be granted.

Norwine was a long-time MAMF member who passed away Oct. 30, 2022. He was Vice President of Haward Corporation for 38 years and then in the metal finishing industry since 1957. After retiring from Haward, he was founder and President of Norwine Associates, specializing in environmental consulting. 

Norwine was in high demand for his expertise in the areas of pollution/environmental advice, and regulatory assistance. He was esteemed in his industry, and received virtually every award and recognition therein, including the Claude Blaser Memorial Award, the highest Award of the Masters' Association of Metal Finishers (MAMF), presented only four times in the organization's history. 

He was also awarded the prestigious National Association of Metal Finishers' (NAMF) Silvio Taormina Award presented for his many years of national and international outstanding service to his industry. Norwine served on the NAMF Board of Directors for ten years, the executive committee for six, and five years as the National Chairman of Government Affairs, writing their bylaws, and traveling the nation speaking on industry behalf. He represented clients and appeared as expert witness before Congress, the EPA, OSHA, NYCDEP, NJDEP, NYCCAC, and PVSC. 

Norwine served two terms as President of the MAMF and on the Board of Directors for 25 years. He served as the NJ state co-chairman of the review panel for the Strategic Goals Program, the EPA's Sustainable Industry Task Force, and Common Sense Initiatives. He was made a Life Member of both the MAMF and the NAMF, and continued his service to these Boards by Presidential appointment. He was also an active member of the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers (AESF).
