ASTM Workshop in May on PFAS, Chromium in Cadmium Plating Properties

ASTM International is holding a workshop on PFAS, percentages of hexavalent chrome in trivalent chrome, and cadmium plating properties.

The event is on May 6 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas, Dallas, Texas. Information can be found at https://na.eventscloud.com/website/90586/b08_may2026_wksh_pfas/

John CarpenterJohn CarpenterAbout the Event: The 2026 Workshop on Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS), Percentages of Hexavalent Chrome in (Trivalent Chrome), and Cadmium Plating Properties will be held on May 6, 2026. The workshop is organized by ASTM Committee B08 on Metallic and Inorganic Coatings and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Dallas in Dallas, Texas, United States, in conjunction with the committee's standards development meetings. The workshop will be conducted in English.

Objective and Scope: Under the EU’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) protocol, coatings and platings changed formulas as of September 2025. Manufacturers who make or use coatings or platings and ship overseas, OEMs, end users, and material consulting firms will find this workshop helpful, as its primary objective is to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to detect and identify appropriate replacements for PFAS and Chromates.

Ian MacCoyIan MacCoyAbstracts for presentation are sought on the following topics:

  • PFAS Detection and Replacement:
    • Utilize ground soil and stormwater sampling, then mitigate runoff with the use of Granulated Activated Charcoal (GAC);
    • Review Recommended Practices (RP) to clean up locations of PFA detection and recommend tests to test properties for PFA replacement in products, such as:
      • Coefficient of Friction (CoF);
      • Open Circuit Potential (OCP);
      • Shelf Life and Corrosion.
    • Chromate Detection and Replacement:
      • Understand the detection, use, and deployment of hexavalent and trivalent chromates in oxidized plating chemistry;
      • Facilities that have used HEX Chromates, review Recommended Practices (RP) to clean up locations of hex-chrome detection and recommend tests to test properties for chromate replacement in products, such as:
        • Coefficient of Friction (CoF);
        • Open Circuit Potential (OCP);
        • Shelf Life and Corrosion.

Abstract Submission: To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word abstract to the technical chairs (listed below) no later than February 27, 2026.

Technical Program: A technical program (presentation times, titles, and presenters’ names) will be posted on the ASTM website by March 2026. Registrants will be emailed the digital Program Booklet, which includes the Technical Program and full abstracts, approximately one week before the event and again on the morning of the event. For more information, contact symposia@astm.org.

Registration: Registration opens approximately 10 weeks before the workshop begins.
