Hubbard-Hall celebrated its 175th anniversary, marking nearly two centuries of innovation, adaptability, and family leadership.
Founded in 1849 as Apothecaries Hall in downtown Waterbury, Connecticut, the company’s journey mirrors the evolution of the American economy—from local deliveries by horse and buggy to international shipments by container ship and from serving farmers with fertilizers to supplying cutting-edge chemistries for high-tech industries.
“Much has changed over 175 years, but the principles that guide us remain changed – take care of your employees, help your customers get better every year, and support your communities,” says CEO Molly Kellogg, the company’s sixth leader. “It’s an absolute privilege to lead a multi-generational company, and I’m excited for the future. We have an amazing team that operates with integrity and is endlessly curious about making processes and products better.”
A Legacy Rooted in Transformation and Community
Hubbard-Hall’s story began in 1849 in downtown Waterbury. The company grew from a local apothecary to a distributor of fertilizers and farm products. In the early 20th century, the industrial boom led Hubbard-Hall to supply commodity chemistries to manufacturers in the Brass Capital of the World, accelerating its transition from an agricultural supplier to an industrial chemical distributor.
Hubbard-Hall continued to grow through two world wars, a global pandemic, and the expansion of America’s industrial base. In 1974, it invested in a new manufacturing location in South Carolina with a commitment to becoming a leading, expertise-based supplier of specialty chemicals. Today, the company supplies over 2,300 customers from 4 locations in the US and through distributors worldwide, with proprietary chemistries for surface cleaning, pretreatment, metal finishing, and wastewater treatment, serving industries ranging from aerospace to medical devices.
Sustaining Excellence Through Generations
Under six generations of family leadership, Hubbard-Hall has achieved numerous milestones, including certifications for ISO 9001:2015, Responsible Distribution, and designation as a Women-Owned Small Business. Eight times recognized as a CT Top Workplace, the company continues to focus on innovation, flexibility, and community stewardship.
As Hubbard-Hall celebrates 175 years, it looks forward to expanding its reach and legacy for the next generation.
